On the 8th of September 2021, our 2018-9 fellow, Danity Laukon gave a keynote address at the General Assembly of the United Nations for the International Day Against Nuclear Testing.

The full recording of the event can be found here.

My Fish is Your Fish

Our 2018-9 fellow, Danity Laukon, led a campaign by the Marshall Islands' Students' Association (MISA) that raises awareness about the Marshall Islands' nuclear past, which is linked through rising sea-levels to the climate change that is affecting the atolls. The campaign has a positive message that through acknowledging the interconnectedness of the islands, we can have a safe and nuclear-free future.

We are proud to support Danity and MISA's campaign: My Fish is Your Fish

In 2018-9, we are proud to have been able to support Danity Laukon from the Marshall Islands Student Association with a small grant, which helped MISA develop their campaign, My Fish is Your Fish. The Pacific Fellowship's support enabled MISA represent key issues related to youth in the Pacific especially that of the Nuclear heritage and its linkage to climate change.

We also supported Danity to come to Melbourne, Australia, to participate in a peace conference, allowing Danity to meet a large group of peace-makers active in Australia. This was a great networking opportunity for MISA to expand its' own network and capacity. The Pacific Fellowship's support also helped members of MISA explore and develop leadership skills, raise the capacity of the student-led initiative, and nurtured creativity through the integrating of cultural themes into videos and events

Welcome, Danity!

After an extensive search, which has involved both a public call, as well as a private nomination, we have found our Pacific Fellow for 2018-2019!

Danity Laukon has been actively campaigning in the Marshall Islands and in Suva, Fiji, as a leading member of the Marshall Islands Student Association (MISA) to raise awareness about the Islands' nuclear history, and the perils shared between the pacific islands through this past. As a mother and an educator, Danity has a strong interest in passing on the Islands' values, traditions and history on to future generations of Marshallese. In addition to the legacy of nuclear testing, the Islands increasingly face threats of rising sea-levels associated with climate change.

During her fellowship, Danity will be talking to elders and capturing their precious wisdom and resilience, and sometimes horrific experiences and testimonies of nuclear testing on the Islands, and reaching out to students, community members and officials across the Pacific to share these unfortunately common experiences. She will join with others in MISA in their collective efforts to build a more peaceful, nuclear-free future in the Pacific.

We acknowledge that we live, work and play on the lands of the First Nations Peoples, who are the traditional custodians of the lands.

These are the lands of their ancestors, lands that they have cared for over thousands of years and which give them physical and spiritual nurture.

We lament the injustices, past and present, enacted by colonial-settlers on First Nations Peoples including loss of life, dispossession, loss of language and culture, damage to the environment.

We acknowledge First Nations Peoples elders, past, present and emerging. We have much to learn from them.
